LOCAL INFORMATION

HISTORY OF SCARBOROUGH
The town was reputedly founded around 966 AD as Skarðaborg by Thorgis Skarthi, a Viking invader. In the 4th century there had briefly been a Roman signal station on Scarborough headland and there is evidence of much earlier Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements. Scarborough recovered under King Henry II who built a castle on the headland and granted town charters in 1155 and 1163 which permitted a market on the sands.
In the Middle Ages, Scarborough Fair was permitted in a royal charter of 1253 and a six-week trading festival attracted merchants from far and wide. It ran from Assumption Day, 15th August, until Michaelmas Day, 29 September. The fair continued to be held for a further five hundred from the 13th century to 18th century. It is said to be commemorated in the song Scarborough Fair.
Scarborough and it's castle changed hands many times between Royalists and Parliamentarians during The English Civil War in the 1640s, enduring two lengthy and violent sieges. After the civil war much of the town lay in ruins.
Scarborough became Britain's first seaside resort, with visitors travelling great distances to take its mineral waters as long ago as the 1660s. In 1626, Elizabeth Farrow had discovered a stream of acidic water running from one of the cliffs to the South of the town. It was not until around 1734 that the first rolling bathing machine that enabled bathers to retain their modesty whilst taking a dip were noted on the beaches. The coming of the York to Scarborough railway in 1845 increased the number of visitors to Scarborough.
The new influx of visitors convinced the architect, John Gibson to open Scarborough's first purpose-built hotel. When in 1841 a railway link between York and Scarborough was being discussed he decided that the area above the South Bay could be developed. He designed the hotel and on Tuesday, 10 June 1845 Scarborough's first hotel was opened as The Grand Hotel

MODERN DAY SCARBOROUGH
Scarborough is the largest resort on the Yorkshire coast with a population of over 50,000. A person from Scarborough is traditionally known as a Scarborian. The town varies greatly from area to area within the town. There are residential communities, shopping areas, business, fishing and service industries and the town has a growing digital and creative economy. The borough of Scarborough also consists of two other coastal towns, Whitby and Filey.
The most striking feature of the town is the high magnificent headland pointing out to the North Sea. The promontory supports the imposing eleventh century ruins of Scarborough Castle and separates the resort into two bays, North Bay and South Bay. The South Bay was the site of the original early medieval settlement and the harbour, which form the area known locally as Old Town. This remains the main tourist area, with a sandy beach, cafés, amusement arcades, theatres and entertainment facilities. Scarborough's fishing industry is still active, although only a shadow of it's former self. The working harbour is home to a fish market including a shop and stalls where there is an abundance of fresh, locally-caught seafood to be found.
The modern commercial town centre looks over the main beach and contains the main shopping and nightlife areas. The town centre has major shopping chains alongside boutique independent shops. The main street has been pedestrianised and has many individual boutiques, specialist shops, inviting eateries and businesses. It is home to the Brunswick Shopping Centre, an all-weather modern shopping centre with a department store and many other retail outlets. The streets leading off the main street have a wide variety of shops and businesses. The town also has an ancient indoor market with a range of local shops and independent traders in its vaults. There are a wide variety of restaurants and cafes throughout the town and of course the town has an abundance of establishments serving the classic Scarborough cuisine of fish and chips.
The North Bay has traditionally been the more peaceful end of the resort and is the home of Peasholm Park. The park still features a mock maritime battle re-enacted on the boating lake with large model boats and fireworks throughout the summer season. The North Bay Railway is a miniature railway which runs from Northstead Manor Gardens to the Sea Life Centre at Scalby Mills. The railway leads past the Open Air Theatre which stages a mixed entertainment programme including music concerts and opera productions.
Scarborough Spa which hosts many events throughout the year including conferences, exhibitions and entertainment. Scarborough Spa consists of The Grand Hall that seats around 2,000 people and hosts live entertainment including the Scarborough Spa Orchestra and an annual Jazz Festival. The Spa Theatre which is a 600 seat Victorian Theatre and is home to Summer Season Shows and Christmas Pantomimes. The Spa Ocean Room is used for dances, conferences and other events. The world-famous Stephen Joseph Theatre is where the majority of Alan Ayckbourn’s hit plays have premiered. The Futurist Theatre hosts live entertainment and the latest of film releases throughout the year.

CAR PARKING
Scarborough roads and car parks can get quite busy at the height of the summer season although there should always be parking somewhere even on the busiest occasions. Parking has become a little easier since the introduction of two large car parks on the outskirts of Scarborough which have a Park And Ride Service available for transportation into the town centre.
The daily and continuous Park and Ride service operates throughout the year from two sites. For traffic from the South there is a site close to Eastfield on the outskirts of the town along the road from Filey. For traffic from the West there is a second site on Seamer Road just on the outside of the town. Buses run from both into the town centre and The South Bay. They run approximately every 12 minutes for seven days a week. There are stopping points throughout the town centre.
